چکیده

BACKGROUND Platelets are routinely stored in plasma for 5 days at an average temperature of 22°C. In the present study, the shelf life of random donor platelets was extended by storing for 7 days with and without additive solution at temperatures of 22°C, 18°C, and 16°C. METHODS Random donor platelets were stored in 100% plasma and 20%/80% platelet additive solution. The data were compared using paired "t"- test. The confidence limit was kept at 95%, hence a "p" < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant. RESULTS Out of total 150 samples, 148 samples were analyzed and 2 were discarded due to the bacterial contamination on day 7 at 22°C without platelet additive solution. A significant difference in platelet count, platelet factor 3 (PF 3), glucose, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and platelet aggregation was observed on day 7 (p < 0.001) at 16°C in without platelet additive solution. In platelet additive solution, the mean values of platelet count, platelet distribution width (PDW), LDH, and pH showed no significant difference on day 7 at 22°C, 18°C, and 16°C. Only significant differences were observed in the levels of mean platelet volume (MPV), PF 3, glucose, and platelet aggregation on day 7 (p < 0.001) at 16°C of the storage period. CONCLUSION Random donor platelets functions are better maintained in platelet additive solution as compared to plasma at a lower temperature of 18°C but not at 16°C, on the 7 th day.

Evaluation of random donor platelets at different temperatures for an ex- tended shelf life

Platelet concentrates can be stored for five days at 22 C. Our objective was to increase the storage of platelets to 7 days by decreasing the storage temperature. Lower temperature may minimize chances of bacterial proliferation and also maintain platelet functions to optimum level. The study sample iincluded 25 blood donors of both sex in State Blood Bank, Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical U...

Morphological and functional changes in random donor platelets stored for seven days in platelet additive solution

Introduction: Platelets are small, anucleated cytoplasmic fragments that play an essential role in blood clotting and wound healing. Platelets are routinely stored in plasma for five days at 220C. Aim: Our objective was to assess platelet morphology and function in random donor platelet stored for seven days in platelet additive solution. Methods: The random donor platelet was prepared by PRP m...

Evaluation of Biochemical Parameters of Platelet Concentrates Stored in Plasma or in A Platelet Additive Solution (Composol)

Abstract Objective Removing plasma from the platelet concentrate (PC) medium could be an effective way to increase the safety of this product. The goal of this study was to compare PC stored in plasma or in an additive solution (Composol) with in vitro testing. Materials and Methods Fifty-four single donor PCs were prepared from Iranian Blood Transfusion Organization (IBTO). Each PC unit wa...

Regular Article TRANSFUSION MEDICINE Exploratory studies of extended storage of apheresis platelets in a platelet additive solution (PAS)

• Extended apheresis platelet storage is dependent on the collection method, storage in a storage solution, and storage bag composition. • The lifespan of the platelet is not intrinsic to the cell, and platelet viability is better maintained in vitro than in vivo. To evaluate the poststorage viability of apheresis platelets stored for up to 18 days in 80% platelet additive solution (PAS)/20% pl...

Exploratory studies of extended storage of apheresis platelets in a platelet additive solution (PAS).

To evaluate the poststorage viability of apheresis platelets stored for up to 18 days in 80% platelet additive solution (PAS)/20% plasma, 117 healthy subjects donated platelets using the Haemonetics MCS+, COBE Spectra (Spectra), or Trima Accel (Trima) systems. Control platelets from the same subjects were compared with their stored test PAS platelets by radiolabeling their stored and control pl...
